Overview
This is a postie’s tracksuit uniform which was introduced by the New Zealand Post Office in 1982, and was worn by posties in New Zealand until 1987. This unisex tracksuit is an excellent example of the influence of sportswear on uniforms, and replaces the grey postie uniform suits that were worn from the mid-1960s.
A Design Reform
In 1975, New Zealand Post Office introduced a new modernised corporate design which transformed the face of the company. The introduction of the new logo, a crown atop a stylised envelope, replaced the traditional crest for New Zealand Post Office.
The introduction of the colours red, blue and white, along with the new logo, became the face of New Zealand Post Office for the next 12 years.
The incorporation of this new look was to transform the identity of posties in the streets – they would now become instantly recognisable in their striking red and blue tracksuits to New Zealanders across the country. An excerpt from the Post Office News in 1982 introduces these new uniform series for posties:
Postal delivery staff will soon begin wearing smart new uniforms designed for the 1980s. Two different styles, one formal and the other more casual, are to be issued in place of the old-style uniform,
A move to introduce the updated designs began several years ago as stocks of the familiar grey uniforms ran short. It was decided to introduce two new uniforms of modern design catering for a wide cross section of tastes (1).
