Post and Telegraph Department; commissioner; 1950s - 1960s; New Zealand
Overview
This postal uniform suit was worn by posties across New Zealand between the early 1950s to the mid- 1960s. This battle-dress styled uniform is influenced by Second World War military uniforms and fashion, and replaces the blue-black postal uniform which was worn up until the early 1950s.
Military Fashion – A cause for concern?
In a Protective Clothing Review written by the Joint Advisory Council in 1952, the council discusses how reference to military fashion and war in the new uniforms might be insensitive for returned soldiers. An excerpt from this report raises these social concerns:
20. One objection which was raised against the adoption of the battle-dress type of uniform was the suggestion that it would be a reminder of the War which returned soldiers might dislike. This objection does not appear to be sustained, for the reason that returned servicemen appear to be most keen for the adoption of the battle-dress style (1).
