Overview
This postal uniform suit was worn by posties across New Zealand between the 1910s and early 1950s.
This uniform is influenced by military uniforms of the late 19th and early 20th centuries with its epaulettes, silver buttons, leather cuffs, red piping, and buttoned pockets. It also includes several practical and versatile features. To avoid discomfort whilst biking and carrying heavy bags full of mail, extra reinforcements have been added in the groin and shoulder area. The jacket also has protective leather cuffs, and leather reinforcements inside the trouser cuffs.
Because these uniforms were each made with an employee’s name label attached, we know that the trousers belonged to an M. J. Armstrong of Taupo, and the jacket to a P. O. McGill of Auckland.
