Overview
White on white
This white on white aloha shirt was purchased at small suburban Riggers Sportswear store in Honolulu. Established in 1984, Riggers aims to cater to kama'ainas, that is Hawaii locals, at wholesale outlet prices. White on white aloha shirts are particuarly popular for weddings and with musicians. For example, the musicians who play at the Halekulani's House Without A Key in Waikiki are expected to wear all white.
Monstera deliciosa
The shirt features a pattern of tropical plants, including monstera deliciosa, which is also known as a fruit salad plant or Swiss cheese plant. While the monstera deliciosa grows in Hawai'i, it is not native to the islands. Originally from Mexico, the monstera deliciosa became a particuarly popular houseplant in the 1950s in modernist interiors. In comparison to this shirt, the designers behind indigienous clothing companies such as Kealopiko and Sig Zane purposely set out to highlight native Hawaiian plants in their aloha shirt designs.
