Overview
This badge promotes equal pay for women for work of equal value.
In 1985, the clerical unions in New Zealand based their award campaign around the theme of equal pay for work of equal value. Badges were made to promote the campaign. The campaign also introduced the famous American cartoon of a young boy and girl looking inside their underpants captioned "Oh! That explains the difference in our wages", which was printed on posters, fliers, leaflets and teatowels (see GH016924).
The pay equity campaign demanded that women be paid similar wages to men doing comparable jobs. In 1986, the Coalition for Equal Value, Equal Pay (CEVEP) was set up by women's groups and unions, and it continues its commitment to reducing the gender pay gap in New Zealand.
