Seaton's Badges; manufacturer(s); 1972; New Zealand
Overview
The defining issue of second-wave feminism was abortion. The women’s liberation movement demanded that all abortion laws be repealed, based on the premise that women had the right to terminate a pregnancy safely and legally.
This New Zealand-made badge features the international slogan ‘Abortion – a woman’s right to choose’, and the Greek letter alpha, used to symbolise abortion. Many of these badges were worn by pro-choice advocates in New Zealand in the early 1970s.
