Overview
This long stone tapa beater has incised grid designs at the end of one side. It is tapered in shape and has a fitted handle.
Shaped by stone
This rare stone tapa beater has been shaped by hammer dressing (chipping with stone). The incised grooves were marked with a bamboo stencil.
Acquisition
This tapa beater was collected between 1964 and 1965 by R Bain and donated by R Bain to the Dominion Museum (Te Papa’s predecessor) in 1966.
