Overview
This kete pīngao was woven by contemporary artist and weaver Tangimoe Clay and features the takitahi and papakirango pattern.
The pīngao used to make this kete was gathered from the Bay of plenty coast, and was planted around the year 2000 as part of an initiative to save coastal sand dunes. Pīngao is harveted during its seed season, when mature gold leaves are carefully harvested in a way that does not damage the plant and allows new leaves to thrive.
Tangimoe made this kete using tradional methods, but her use of pīngao reflects her relationship with the natural environment as a weaver.
"It is important to gather (pīngao) as a kaitiaki, only taking what is healthy, strong, and the right length. This allows the young leaves to mature, and the plant to thrive"
Tangimoe Clay, 2020
