Overview
Two binding referenda were held in 2015 and 2016 to decide whether New Zealand would have a new flag. The Blind Foundation produced this book of tactile and Braille versions of the flag designs to ensure blind and visually impaired voters could make an informed choice.
Options were considered by between May 2015 and March 2016. It was the first time that New Zealanders had had a say in the design of their flag. Five designs were selected by the Flag Consideration Panel from 10,292 submissions. These 5 alternatives were then ranked in the first referendum held in November to December 2015. Kyle Lockwood's silver fern design (black, white and blue) won the vote. His flag was then ranked against the current New Zealand flag (blue ensign) in the second referendum held in March 2016.
Final decision
The majority of voters (56.6%) chose to retain the current flag in the final referendum in March 2016.
