Overview
This rugby ball belonged to Mikaere Haumaha who really enjoyed playing touch rugby with it. Mikaere spends a great deal of his spare time outside playing with his brother Cruix. Rugby is just one of the sports the boys enjoy – football, athletics and swimming also keep them busy.
Like so many other kiwi boys and girls, touch rugby is a good introduction to the much more rougher game of rugby. In touch rugby players do not tackle each other in the traditional way, but instead they can tackle by touching the opponent’s body, clothing, or the ball.
Mikaere is a participant in Te Papa’s Collecting Childhood project and Auckland University’s Growing Up in New Zealand study. As part of this project Mikaere and other children share their daily lives with us and donate items that represent key moments or the things they like doing.
