Overview
This intrauterine delivery system is an example of long-acting reversible contraception, providing contraceptive cover for up to three years. This is a demonstraton system for instruction purposes.
The device contains a synthetic hormone, levonorgestrel, which is also one of the active ingredients used in many oral contraceptives. Immediately after the insertion, low doses of the hormone start to be released continuously into the body. When removed, fertility resumes.
This technology is useful for women who want a 'fit and forget' method, and is more reliable than having to remember to take a daily pill.
