Condoms made from animal products have a long history, but were largely replaced by latex and synthetic alternatives in the second half of the twentieth century. People allergic to synthetics can use specialist products such as this example made from lamb intestines.
This particular product is intended to help prevent pregnancy. It does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases.
This object was collected by Dame Margaret Sparrow, one of New Zealand’s leading specialists and advocates on birth control and sexual health.
