Overview
These small plastic rods are examples of long-acting reversible contraceptive implants used to prevent pregnancy (these are inactive rods for instruction purposes), and can provide contraceptive cover for up to five years.
This product contains a synthetic hormone, levonorgestrel, which is also one of the active ingredients used in many oral contraceptives. The rods are inserted just beneath the skin on the inside of a woman's upper arm and is performed by a doctor. Immediately after the insertion, low doses of the hormone start to be released continuously into the body. When the implants are removed, fertility resumes.
This technology is useful for women who want a 'fit and forget' method, and is more reliable than having to remember to take a daily pill.
