Overview
Tracey Moffatt has said that her Beauty photographs are her tribute to pop artist Andy Warhol, particularly his screen-printed, saturated colour portraits of film stars like Marilyn Monroe.
These images revolutionised ideas about Aboriginal art. They registered the impact of modernity and international art on Aboriginal practice, and, importantly, gave validity to urban Aboriginal experience and expression.
They showed that Aboriginal art did not have to contain dots, tell tribal stories, use ochres, or be created in a remote part of Australia to be understood as Aboriginal art.
