Message to 'My Dear Mum'
Fred Hansen sent this postcard to his mother while he was recovering from tuberculosis (TB) at Oatlands Park hospital in England during World War I. Oatlands Park was attached to No. 2 New Zealand General Hospital at Walton-on-Thames. Carpenter Fred had contracted TB while serving in the New Zealand Engineers’ Tunnelling Company at Arras, France. Fred wrote the rest of his message on two other postcards.

...that is here was up to London when it happened + he was ordered to go down under St Pauls Cat[hedral] while it was on he said that there was a lot killed I got five more letters today + have started to answer them one from you, Lena, Herm, Tom [Bonisep], (Rosie Bartholomew in answer to a card I sent her + [illeg]). Those almonds + caramels where [sic] just the thing. They didn't last long I was at them all the time + gave some away the grand fellow that goes out with me had a good few he is a nice boy + like me has no time for drink except milk nor running after damn girls. I am not bad now my self hope these find you all well
