Overview
The ANZAC Commemorative Medallion.
A circular bronze medallion surmounted by a Crown. The obverse depicts 'Simpson' [ John Simpson Kirkpatrick] and his donkey assisting a wounded man. Laurel leaves and a scoll inscribed 'ANZAC' are below the figures and the date '1915' is beside the figures.
The reverse shows a relief map of Australia ands New Zealand with the Southern Cross around it. Below is a wreath of fern fronds and a ribbon engraved with the name 'N.C. SWINARD'.
This medallion is a significant memento of the 50th anniversary commemorations of the Gallipoli campaign, when many of the Australian and New Zealand veterans would still have ben alive to receive the medallions in person. The iconography of the medallion is significant as drawing attention to the bonds of shared ANZAC experience between Australia and New Zealand.
