Overview
This poster was produced for a demonstration in Wellington on 24 May 1983 when a large group of women roped themselves around the perimeter of the Department of Defence headquarters building in Stout Street, Wellington. Their protest was peaceful and was part of the International Women’s Day for Nuclear Disarmament (which had originated in Europe).
Impact of protest
According to a Defence staff member who was in the building at the time, this was an emotional moment. The men in the office were 'full of bravado' but when the women linked hands, they fell silent.
