Overview

This Cook Islands' inaki (fish trap) is in the form of a round-sectioned basket that is dome-shaped at one end. A funnel leads into the trap from the wider end. The loop on one side would have been used to attach a suspension rope. There is a plaited sennit (coconut husk fibre) suspension cord attached to the top of the basket. The rim around the entire circumference of the trap opening is tightly bound with thick sennit cord.

Usage
The trap is lightweight and easy to handle. Fisherman would tie small fish inside to serve as bait for sea eels and other larger fish. The trap would be set and checked at regular intervals.
