Popeye toy
Popeye the Sailor Man was a cartoon character created by Elzie Crisler Segar. Popeye first appeared in a comic strip named Thimble Theatre, 17 January 1929.
This toy, made in the early 1940s, was created when Popeye was extremely popular following a series of animated cartoon shorts made for Paramount Pictures and shown in cinemas in the 1930s. Popeye became famous for gaining super-human strength when he ate spinach. The toy belonged to Eileen Sampson who was a young girl when she received it in the 1940s. When wound up, the head would have moved vigorously up and down.
Popeye has appeared in comic books, television cartoons, arcade and video games, as well as in advertisements for a variety of products throughout the world.
