Overview
This man's corset belonged to Edward Guard in about 1974. He purchased it to wear as a support for his injured back, as was recommended by his doctor. Edward had injured his back after years of work as a shearer and then fisherman.
It appears that by 1978 medical opinion had completely changed, exercise rather than rest was now prescribed. Edward's doctor recommended he stop wearing a corset and strengthen his back by exercising the muscles instead.
