Badge, 'Remember Soweto!'

This badge was made by the National Anti-Apartheid Committee, possibly at the time of its conference in 1977. The committee was part of widespread anti-apartheid activism in New Zealand which had grown steadily from the 1960s.

This badge draws particular attention to the riots in Soweto, South Africa, in 1976 when demonstrating students were fired upon. At that time, New Zealand's national rugby team, the All Blacks, had accepted an invitation to tour South Africa. The tour attracted international condemnation of New Zealand, resulting in a massive African boycott of the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
