Overview
This poster was created to protest against the New Zealand government's controversial agreement with Australia to purchase four Anzac-class frigates at a cost of $2 billion. The frigates were to be built in Australia with involvement from New Zealand industry, and were part of an Australian initiative to boost naval power in the South Pacific. Many questioned why New Zealand needed frigates, and critics argued that social needs were greater than those of defence.
The cartoon by Trace Hodgson features Prime Minister of New Zealand, David Lange, sharing a bath tub with the Prime Minister of Australia, Bob Hawke.
The overall protest campaign was partially successful: only two frigates were eventually purchased.
