Overview
This ski underwear, called a 'onesie', was made by Andrew Watt specifically to meet his requirements for skiing. Initially, he and a friend bought offcuts of fine merino wool from Icebreaker, and 'thought it would be a funny way to keep warm while skiing'. They used an old wetsuit pattern and did the sewing themselves, but with training and equipment provided by Andrew's mother. They documented the process through a series of photographs.
The onesies were very successful in keeping them warm while skiing, but less than successful in terms of using the bathroom as there was only the front zip. However, they've been worn on skifields throughout New Zealand and overseas. When people hear about Andrew's underwear, 'most people shake their heads and laugh, but are always amazed at how little else I wear (under my outer wear, jacket pants helmet etc) while skiing as it is so warm.'
Materially, this garment is interesting because it is made from merino offcuts sourced from Icebreaker, a significant New Zealand clothing company which introduced a very successful line of fine merino wool sports and leisure clothing in 1994.
