Overview
The Distinguished Conduct Medal was awarded to non-commissioned members of the British and Colonial forces for outstanding acts of bravery in action. Only 13 D.C.Ms were awarded to New Zealanders in the South African War (1899-1902).
Sergeant-Major Ernest Barnett Lockett (1863-1943, New Zealand) won this medal when 'against tremendous odds he alone rushed the Boers and with great gallantry rescued a prisoner from them'. Details on his medal include:
