Overview
This is a very fine example of New Zealand numismatic art. It is also significant as an example of Premier Richard John Seddon's importance as a national political figure, who was called upon on numerous occasions all over New Zealand to preside over opening celebrations of public works and buildings during his thirteen years (1893-1906) in power.
The Waihi Mining Industry
The Martha Mine was established in 1879 by William Nicholl, and soon became one of the world’s most important gold and silver mines. An underground mine until 1952, the mine produced over 170 metric tons of gold and almost 1200 metric tons of silver. The mine continues to operate today as an open pit.
The medal refers to the opening of the “Cornish Pumphouse” in the early 1900s. This allowed water to be pumped out of the mine at a rate of 400,000 litres per hour using a steam engine.
