Overview
Allegiance to the British Empire
This address of welcome to Field Marshal Lord Kitchener from the Ngati Apa, Whanganui, Rangitaane and Muaupoko tribes was given during Kitchener's visit to New Zealand in February 1910. It was delivered at the Wellington Club on 26 February 1910 by representatives of West Coast tribes who fought for the Crown in the the New Zealand Land Wars (1845-1872).
The address symbolises the loyalty of some New Zealand iwi (tribe) to the British Monarchy and Empire. It is printed in a bound album in English and Te Reo and signed by Taraua U. Marumaru on behalf of the iwi. According to the Evening Post report of the visit on 28 February 1910, 'Lord Kitchener expressed a desire to hear it in Maori, and after it had been spoken, expressed his sincerest appreciation.'
