Overview
This badge promotes the New Zealand Red Cross earthquake recovery programme in Canterbury, and expresses support with the message 'We love Christchurch'.
The image of flowers in a traffic road cone is slightly more unusual as it references a particular phenomenon. Just before the first anniversary of the devastating Canterbury earthquake of 22 February 2011, Christchurch artist Henry Sunderland proposed that people decorate every road cone in the city with flowers. In response, on 22 February 2012 people decorated thousands of road cones with fresh flowers throughout Christchurch, and also overseas in Australia, London, Singapore and Mexico.Red Cross were inspired to add the idea as an image to their newsletter bannerhead and other paraphenalia such as badges.
