Overview
Some IUDs caused serious health problems. The notorious Dalkon Shield was used in New Zealand from 1971 to 1975. The polyfilament thread could draw infection into the uterus and cause septic abortions. More than 400 New Zealand women sought compensation for injury and infertility, and the Ministry of Health organised a removal programme in 1985.
