Overview
This hybrid garment reflects Comme des Garcons interest in agendered clothing, and the company's playful approach to deconstructing and subverting standard clothing traditions. As well as producing fused trouser skirts such as this example, the company has also produced a range of skirts made from trousers.
This trouser skirt was purchased from a Wellington boutique called Scotties in 2007 by Jo Torr, an artist who works in the medium of costume. Scotties began importing Comme des Garcons garments in the 1980s, along with other highly influential and controversial Japanese designers such as Issey Miyake.
Jo Torr was attracted to the quality of the fabric and tailoring, but also the garment's 'kooky factor'. As a skilled dress maker who makes many of her own clothes, including garments made from deconstructed men's suits, Jo sites Commes des Garcons as a strong influence on her own work.
