Overview
This T-shirt promoted the International Year of Peace designated by the United Nations in 1986. The New Zealand government appointed the Aoteoroa Committee for United Nations International Year of Peace to oversee and organise events for the year.
Cartoonist Murray Ball created the 'Nuclear free seal of Aotearoa' as the mascot. On its chest is the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament symbol.
The Year of Peace was an important focus for over 350 independent peace groups throughout New Zealand. Their activities for the year included music, poetry, walks, dances, art and banner exhibitions, church services and peace education in schools.
As a result of extensive campaigning, the South Pacific was declared a nuclear-free zone in 1986.
