Overview
Head and shoulders portrait of a Maori man identified as Whitiora Te Kumete, in three quarter profile. He has white hair, a moko, and is wearing a hieke (rain cape) over his clothes. The print is rather faded and the background has been heavily retouched. Thre is a label under the image, which reads: 'Whitiora (passed over safely). One of the defenders of Rangiriri. The name was given him because he swam the lake and got away safely, 1863.'
