Overview
Prior to training as a jeweller, Joanna Campbell worked in the clothing industry as a production assistant and as a dress maker. Since establishing herself as an independent jeweller in 2001, Campbell's passion for fashion and textiles has continued to inform her jewellery practice. She is known for creating metal jewellery that implies the drape, texture and fragility of fabric.
In 2002 Joanna Campbell worked as a jeweller for Samurai Pictures which made the film The Last Samurai, which was filmed in Taranaki. In the Samurai workshop, she became interested in a range of Japanese techniques, in-particular surface coloured copper alloys which enable metal workers to produce different colour effects beyond gold and silver. Surface-coloured copper alloys containing a small percentage of gold are called 'shakudo' or 'black gold'.
The ring is embossed with lace patterns from her own collection of lace.
