Overview
This handmade heart represents over 4000 hearts made for the Hearts for Christchurch project started by Napier woman Evie Harris.
She began creating and gathering hearts after the devastating Canterbury earthquake of 22 February 2011 when 'the visions of destruction in Christchurch broke my heart'. She spread the word through her blog, and hearts came pouring in from all over the world, in all shapes and sizes, different materials, by all sorts of makers, and many with messages of support and love. Evie calls them 'fun-raisers' and carefully documented each heart online.
The hearts were displayed in an exhibition called 'Hearts for Christchurch' at Canterbury Museum from September 2011 to February 2012, after which most of them were distributed to the people of Canterbury.
Hearts are a symbol of love and care. This heart is a small gesture of support made during a difficult time.
