Crown Lynn Nursery Ware
This set of children's nursery ware made by Crown Lynn in about 1985 includes a plate, bowl and cup. It is decorated with nursery characters by English illustrator Norman Meredith (1909 – 2005).
The illustrations on this set refer to popular children's nursery rhyme characters and themes such as the 'dish running away with the spoon' and children playing possibly from the 18th century nursery rhyme 'Boys and Girls Come Out to Play'. Several of the images appear to relate to this particular rhyme:
Girls and boys, are come out to play,
The moon doth shine as bright as day;
Leave your supper, and leave your sleep,
And come with your playfellows into the street.
Come with a whoop, come with a call,
Come with a good will or not at all.
Up the ladder and down the wall,
A halfpenny roll will serve us all.
You find milk, and I'll find flour,
And we'll have a pudding in half an hour.
Crown Lynn’s nursery ware, first produced in the 1950s, was set up in competition to the popular Royal Doulton Bunnykins range. During the 1980s Crown Lynn’s nursery ware was one of their most successful lines and included characters from television shows such as Paddington Bear, the Wombles,
