Overview
This sampler is typical of a young girl's needlework from this period. Through the making of a sampler, girls learnt their stitching, but also learnt their letters and numbers.
This sampler was stitched by 12-year old Gwen Morrison of Dunedin.
Gwen died in January 1920 from influenza when she was 20 years old. Her death came only a year after the terrible influenza pandemic that struck New Zealand between October and December 1918, killing thousands.
