Overview
This is a memento of a local celebration of an important event in the British Empire: the coronation of the monarch, Edward, in 1902.
Members of five iwi attended the event held at Blenheim on 9 August 1902. The programme shows 'the parts taken in the Celebrations by his Maori Subjects'. It outlines the events that took place: the preparation of a hāngī, haka, poi dances and speeches.
Porirua chief, Hanikamu Te Hiko was related by marriage to Māori who lived at the nearby Wairau pā, and had been in charge of the hāngī.
The Marlborough Express later quoted words that hespokeat the event: 'We have thorough trust in King Edward, who is above the Maori people, who areunder him. Hurrah.'
