Knitted Doll
Knitting is a popular past time for many New Zealanders, a tradition that has its roots in our Anglo-Celtic heritage. Whilst hand-made clothes and knitted garments has at times been a necessity, particularly when the production of a knitted garment was much cheaper than a manufactured one, the creation of knitted dolls and other soft toys has been a much more fanciful activity.
Many knitted toys are made for the creator’s pleasure or for a loved one, but hundreds of others have been created for the fundraising activities of many organisations and charities. This knitted doll is thought to have been purchased at a school gala or possibly charity shop. Other similar knitted toys have been sent to under privileged children overseas, become part of raffle prizes or gifted to sick or injured children in New Zealand.
