Overview
This badge was produced for members of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association, and features a red shorthorn cow standing in a sunlight paddock.
English Shorthorns were the first introduced into New Zealand by the Reverend Samuel Marsden in 1814, for the use of missionaries living in the Bay of Islands. Herds of shorthorns were well established in the country by the 1840s, providing milk for dairy products, and beef. They were also employed as draught animals. During the 19th century breeders developed two types of shorthorn - one for milking, and one for beef.
The New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association was founded in 1913.
