Overview
This badge was produced for the New Zealand Friesian Association to be given to Honorary Life Members.
The first Holstein Friesian cows were imported into New Zealand 1884 by John Grigg, a Canterbury-based farmer. The breed soon gained popularity in both the North and South Islands, and in 1910, breeders formed the New Zealand Holstein Friesian Association in order to keep accurate records of the breed’s pedigree. Coleman Phillips, a Wairarapa breeder, was elected as the first president, and in 1913 became the first member of the association to be awarded life membership for his service to the breed - an award which is only available to 20 living members of the association at any one time. When these badges were made in the 1970s, the organisation was known as the New Zealand Friesian Association. In 1916, the association dropped ‘Holstein’ from the name ‘on patriotic grounds’. In 1984, the association reinstalled it, becoming the New Zealand Holstein Friesian Association.
