Overview

This sash was presented to Miss New Zealand, Lorraine Downes, at the 1983 Miss Universe pagaent in 1983 in St. Louis, Missouri.

When performing her Miss Universe duties Lorraine Downes was required to wear her sash at all times as a ready means of identification. According to the Official Miss Universe Handbook the sash added ‘magnetism and charisma’ to Miss Universe’s total presentation. Lorraine recalls fans always ensuring that the sash was visible when they clamoured to have their picture taken with Miss Universe as evidence that they really had met the most beautiful woman in the world.
