Overview
Prior to training as a jeweller, Joanna Campbell worked in the clothing industry as a production assistant and as a dress maker. Since establishing herself as an independent jeweller in 2001, Campbell's passion for fashion and textiles has continued to inform her jewellery practice. She is known for creating metal jewellery implies the drape, texture and fragility of fabric. This work reflects her interest in textiles, pattern and colour.
Joanna Campbell became interested in working with copper and copper alloys when she was working as a jeweller for Samurai Pictures, the makers of The Last Samurai, which was filmed in Taranaki. Commenting that she had become 'bored with silver and gold', she began experimenting with copper in her practice. Gold and copper alloys such as shibuichi, which is olive green in colour, allowed Campbell to explore both pattern and colour in her work.
The cuff is embossed with lace patterns from her own collection of lace.
