Colin Simon; graphic designer; 1971; New Zealand
Overview
This poster promotes the sport of swimming, one of nine sports played at the 10th British Commonwealth Games held in Christchurch, New Zealand from 24 January to 2 February 1974.
There were nine posters altogether designed in the four official colours of the Games. The resulting electric colours required four printing plates using contour-line films made from original black and white photo collages. In the top left corner is the iconic 'NZ' logo by Colin Simon - it is instantly recognisable, and has been reiterated in popular culture many times since 1974.
The 1974 Commonwealth Games were named 'the friendly games' and remain New Zealand's favourite international multi-sport hosted event.
