2011
Overview
This item forms part of a complete ensemble from Jimmy D's 2011 autumn-winter 2011 collection, Until the Light Takes Us, which was launched at New Zealand Fashion Week, 2010, where it was critically well received. Working in his characteristic monochromatic palette, black and white dominated the collection, which featured a range of voluminous, multi-purpose silk pieces that were draped, twisted or printed, and contrasted with brushed cotton garments. Within the collection Dobson contrasts pieces he describes as "drippy, over-sized and top heavy', with more body conscious designs, including his own range of under garments that reference 1980s sportswear and punk culture.
While the collection reflects Dobson's signature working style and characteristic 'dark' approach, the styling of the collection also reflects a wider interest within popular culture in the late 2000s, early 2010s, with vampires (note the Twilight film series, and television series True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, Being Human) and the Gothic. As with Dobson's own work, these popular culture references share an ironic take and sly sense of humour.
