Overview
This Red Ribbon brooch was made to commemorate World AIDS Day on 1 December 2010 in Australia. The donors acquired it at a World AIDS Day service in Brisbane. It indicates both the global concern over the presence of HIV and AIDS, as well as the close connections between communities in Australia and New Zealand.
World AIDS Day has been observed on 1 December since 1987. The day is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Many countries, including New Zealand, hold memorials to honour those who have died from HIV / AIDS. Governments also observe the event, often with speeches or forums on AIDS topics.
The Red Ribbon is the global symbol for solidarity with HIV-positive people and those living with AIDS.
