Overview
The 1st Battalion of the 9th (Wellington East Coast) Regiment was formed in 1911 but on 27 March 1914 was re-designated as the 9th (Hawke’s Bay) Regiment.
The Regiment's insignia features the head of a red deer stag, symbolising alertness, strength, determination and readiness to defend one’s territory. The fern leaves symbolise New Zealand and the Crown symbolises loyalty to the monarch.
The Regiment's motto ‘Kia toa’ means ‘Be brave’
