This badge was worn by member of the 4th (Otago Rifles) Regiment, which was formed in 1911 from Volunteer units in Dunedin.
The badge depicts a kiwi and fern leaves as symbols of New Zealand.
There is no motto on the badge, but the inscription ‘South Africa 1901–02’ refers to the regiment’s battle honours for service in the Second South African War (Boer War).
The design for this badge was approved by Lt.-General Godley on 18 July 1911.
