Overview
These engageants or undersleeves were worn under the sleeves of a woman's dress. Only the decorative cuffs would have been seen. Wearing undersleeves protected the dress from the wearer's skin, and could be easily removed and washed.
Broderie anglaise is fine eyelet embroidery. The embroidery on these sleeves is particularly interesting for its unusual geometric pattern.
