Overview
The Corps of New Zealand Engineers was formed in 1903.
The Engineers supported combat operations by performing vital tasks like building and maintaining communication routes, trenches, dugouts, and tunnels.
The Corps' cap badge displays the initials 'NZE' for 'New Zealand Engineers' and a Crown and lion, symbolising loyaly to the monarch as head of the British empire.
The Latin motto 'Quo fas et gloria ducunt' means ‘Whither right and glory lead’, reflecting the field engineers’ duty to support fighting troops wherever needed.
The proposed designs for the Corps' badges were approved on 10 July 1911 by Lt.-General Godley, General Officer Commanding, New Zealand Military Forces : 'Engineers. The G.O.C. desires that all Companies should adopt the one badge, as follows:- Hat or Cap.- Monogram N.Z.E. surrounded by circle bearing the Motto "Quo fas et gloria ducunt" and surrounded by a crown and lion. Collar badges - Plain Engineer grenade.'
