Overview
This badge was worn by members of the 14th (South Otago Rifles) Regiment, which was formed in 1911 from Volunteer units in South Otago.
Design
The design for the regiment's cap and collar badges was approved by Lt.-General Godley on 15 August 1911.
The regiment's badge depicts a wreath of red rose, shamrock, and thistle (the national flowers of England, Ireland, and Scotland). These are the countries most Pākehā who settled in Southland came from, and according to the original design proposal for the badge submitted by the Regiment, symbolises unity.
Also shown is a Kea, the large native parrot living in the forested and alpine regions of the South Island. The Kea is depicted preparing to fly, which the Regiment stated was 'symbolic of being prepared'. The Roman numeral XIV (14) is prominently displayed on the cap badge.
The regiment's motto 'Ake kia kaha’ means ‘Be for ever strong’.
