Overview
This unit's cap badge is on display at Te Papa in Gallipoli: The scale of our war.
These are the cap and collar badges of the 3rd (Auckland) Regiment (Countess of Ranfurly's Own) which was formed in 1911 as the renamed 1st Battalion, Auckland Infantry (Countess of Ranfurly's Own), which included men from Volunteer units in Auckland City and North Auckland.
‘Countess of Ranfurly's Own’ refers to Lady Ranfurly (wife of Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand 1897–1904), who presented the Auckland Infantry with their first colours (regimental flag) in 1899.
The Regiment was the first New Zealand unit to land on Gallipoli, and among the last to leave.
Design
The design of the Regiment's cap and collar badges was approved by Lieutentand General Godley, GOC, New Zealand Military Forces, on 10 July 1911.
The upraised, armour-clad arm holding a sheaf of wheat is from the coat of arms of Lord Auckland after whom the City and Province of Auckland is named. The Crown symbolises loyalty to the monarch and the fern leaves symbolise New Zealand.
The Latin motto 'Sisit prudentia' means ‘Ever prudent'.
